hi, i'm ellen szabo.

Everyone has a story worth telling. Whether you're writing to process life’s challenges, explore your creativity, or share your truth with others, I’m here to support you. You don’t have to consider yourself a writer—just bring your curiosity, your voice, and a willingness to explore. Together, we’ll uncover the power of your story.

holistic • intuitive • transformative

For over three decades, I’ve blended the worlds of creative writing, counseling, and social work to develop a holistic, transformative approach to writing. Grounded in narrative theory and supported by research in expressive writing, my work encourages emotional resilience, personal growth, and meaningful self-expression. I help clients connect deeply with their stories—and discover the healing and insight that comes from telling them.

in my client's words:

"I was privileged to first learn from Ellen at the Iowa writing workshop for mental health workers, Creative Writing for Social Work, during the height of covid. From the comfort of my home, I was virtually swept away. I have continued in virtual groups with her ever since. Ellen’s encouragement, wisdom, guidance, and helpful critique enabled me to foster a skill that lay buried in the unprocessed rubble of my life. Ellen is relatable and kind and guides writers to produce their best work. Ellen creates a safe forum to write and weave my stories. She holds space to network in an environment that facilitates growth in writing, and through this process, healing comes, as does self-exploration and friendships formed. I recently shared some of my writing with my mother who said, “I didn’t know you were a writer?” “Neither did I,” I replied.

Writing group with Ellen has been transformative, personally and professionally. Recently I was asked to write an updated chapter in an edited professional book, already accepted by the publisher. The fact that I can be a part of the collaborative professionals tasked with this assignment is due to my work with Ellen Szabo."

creative writing for transformation

write to feel better

I’ve dedicated my career to helping others heal and grow through storytelling. I hold a B.A. in English and American Literature from Harvard College and a M.Ed. in Counseling Psychology from Columbia University Teachers College. I’ve served as a college counselor, directed organizations providing domestic violence and sexual assault support services, and taught Creative Writing for Social Work at the University of Iowa—the only seminar of its kind. Most recently my workshops have been showcased in the clinical setting, providing a transformative experience for professional and family caregivers and people living with chronic conditions including early dementia.
